Tasty Video

After learning about our interviewees dish it was our turn to cook it. After our first time cooking we began to work out the kinks of what went well and what didn’t. Eventually we had to make a ‘Tasty’ style video of us cooking our dish. As a group we would prepare our dish and film it from a above view. After, as a group we would work to edit it together.
We didn't have much time to improve our work quality because we only had an hour to film it and not to long to edit the video. But the biggest thing that I was able to improve was the editing process. The process of editing is extremely meticulous and there is always something that you can improve.
I am proud of the fact that we were able to finish the video in the time given. Initially I didn't think we were going to be able to finish it. We collaborated well by distributing the workload equally to everyone in the group.
Latin American Interview Reflection

After interviewing a local community member from our chosen country, we had to reflect on what they said. This means looking onto the cultural differences and the many struggles that other countries had to endure. My country was Chile, for the past 50 years they have had a very tough and controversial history with leaders like Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet. Our interviewees name was Sady, she had been living in the US for many years now. She gave us a unique look into the culture and history in Chile.
This reflection was very tough for me initially, because i had to write it in spanish. There was a lot I wanted to talk about but because of my limited writing abilities in spanish it was hard to express. So the majority of improvements I made during this project were with spelling and sentence structure.
If I had to do this project again I would take more time while writing it and work with my peers to create a better reflection. Some of my friends are really good at writing in spanish and they could have been a great resource for me.

Family Dish Cooking Video

After interviewing my Nonna, we had to make a cooking video of the dish that meant the most to our grandparents. For my Nonna, that was Gallo Pinto, a traditional Costa Rican plate. So I had to create a video of me preparing this dish at home and say the directions in spanish.
The biggest improvements I made throughout this project was the quality of my pronunciation. I had to retake a lot of my shots because I wasn't pronouncing things properly or wasn't sticking to the script. I also had to take a lot of extra shots to improve the focus on my camera.
I am really proud of how my final product of this project turned out. The shots were really nice and the pronunciation of words also worked out well. It was interesting to cook a dish that I know had so much history in not only my family, but Costa Rica as well. I feel as if my cooking skills really improved over the course of this because of the multiple times I had to do it over again. Every time you learn something new that makes it taste a little better.
If I was going to do this project over again I would just fix little pronunciation problems that I had throughout the video. I was rushing a lot of it while making it, but looking back I would want to slow it down and focus on the little things more. It doesn’t seem like much in the moment but it’s the little things that make one good big product.

Family Interview Reflection

We were assigned to write a reflection about our family interview. The interview of our family asked them about their lives as children and what food they grew up with. Later that year, we would cook and make a video about the dish that meant the most to them from there child hood. This reflection would give us a chance to look deeper into the interview we had with them.
At first my reflection didn’t have much depth to it because I didn't really see the importance of making a long reflection after an interview. But as I thought about it more, I realized that it was making me think deeper about the things my Nonna said. I actually began to realize things that I would have if I hadn't done the reflection.
I was most proud of the fact that I was able to turn around the paper and turn it into something that meant a lot to me. The reflection helped me gain the perspective of my Nonna's life, the experiences that she went through growing up were really interesting to learn about. I got a lot better at seeing the meaning behind work that doesn't initially seem so important but does actually have great purpose. I also learned how to understand my Nonna's spanish much better.
If I had to do the reflection over again, I would have put more thought into the questions I asked her. I didn’t really think about the questions initially and because of this the interview didn’t have the depth it could have. I know that my Nonna has a lot of wisdom and I don’t think I used my interview to the full potential.
